If you are planning to start your own Do It Yourself (DIY) electric car conversion project, you need to head over to the golf course. No, I am not suggesting you play a round of golf there, but rather, head over to the golf carts service station.

Like any admirer of the game of golf; you too are sure to be acquainted with the expensive batteries that are required to power your homemade electric vehicle. However, if you think that you can simply pick up the used batteries, recharge them and use again, you are in for an unpleasant surprise and will find that the job is not that simple.

After you are through with these, the costly replacement of the exhausted and inefficient batteries is going to put a strain on your purse. But everything is not lost and you can take some necessary steps to make the second hand golf cart batteries work more effectively and serve you for a considerable length of time on your EV.

The first and foremost thing to consider is how the old golf cart batteries were maintained which will determine their life span and will eventually help you to not only cut down your expenses on replacement batteries but will also help your DIY electric vehicle runs efficiently. Remember to check the batteries and ensure that there are no leakages.

If you find the batteries are damaged, take necessary steps, which will not will give a longer life span to these but will also provide optimum power to your EV and cater to your entire satisfaction. You should regularly check for any cracks and defects with the batteries as well as the terminals.

After you have setup the batteries on your electric car, you should make the cleaning of the terminals an integral part of your maintenance routine and ensure that these are free of dust, dirt and water to prevent corrosion. However, to avoid any health hazard you must adopt the necessary precautionary measures while performing your maintenance routine.

This is of utmost importance since direct contact with acid batteries can harm your skin. To remain safe, you should always use distilled or de-ionized water for maintenance and cleaning purpose. Do not forget to check the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions of the batteries, which will lead to a longer life span of your batteries and bring down your replacement expenditure.

Acquaint yourself with the tried and tested measures of cleaning your electric vehicle power source, since this will ensure that your batteries work properly and also last longer. Follow the recommended maintenance routine and while performing this, ensure that the vent caps are tightly fitted.

Always use the recommended equipment and tools for maintenance and cleaning. You should also be mindful of the fact that proper charging of the batteries will ensure their optimum performance. You need to exhaust the batteries before charging and should always fully charge these; however, keep a keen eye and ensure that the batteries do not get over charged, since this will harm the batteries.

Last but not the least, filling your batteries with water up to the right level is a very important function that will ensure proper functioning of these over a long period and hence, as soon as the plates get covered stop filling water to your batteries.

If you follow these simple steps and the recommended maintenance schedule, you can ensure extended life span for the batteries on your custom made electric car, thereby reducing the necessity of early replacement of these and the associate cost, too.

Most of the recreational vehicles or sports vehicles are equipped with lead-acid batteries, also called deep cycle batteries. These batteries are so designed that they retain the charge for a long time even without any external source of power.

However, as this type of battery utilizes lead -acid in liquid form as an internal source of electricity, it can lose the charge very fast, if not maintained well. Fortunately, there is no need to purchase a new battery for your homemade electric car if the performance of the original battery begins to deteriorate.

The original deep cycle battery can be easily reconditioned. Reconditioning of deep cycle battery is comparatively a simple job and one can take up even as a do-it-yourself (DIY) venture. However, an external battery charger is required to recondition a deep cycle battery.

In addition, certain tools and consumables, like vise grips or a crescent wrench, steel wool, a funnel, a bucket and a pair of rubber gloves are also needed. Besides these items, baking soda, distilled water and Epsom salts should also be readily available for the job.

Steps For Reconditioning Old Deep Cycle Battery

To start with, make sure that acid is not leaking from the battery. The surface of the battery should not be touched with bare hands even if there is a little leakage, instead use a pair of gloves.

The next step is to disconnect the battery by removing positive and negative cables and after that take out the battery from the case. Clean both the housing of the battery and each one of the terminals with a paste prepared from baking soda and water. Steel wool will be useful for applying paste to the battery.

Afterwards, take out the plastic plugs normally located at the top of a battery and draw off the contents of the battery cells into the bucket. If the batteries are sealed, the caps cannot be removed and in that case, try to find out if there are any soft hollow portions along the top of the battery.

Sealed batteries are generally opened and drained out by drilling holes in each of theses hollow portions, using a1/4 inch drill bit. As the battery cells are being drained, mix quarter of a gallon of distilled water and eight ounces of Epsom salts and then blend the mixture well till the Epsom salts are fully dissolved. As a next step, fill all the cells of the battery with the mixture using a funnel.

After filling, replace the caps or seal the battery once again and make it ready for re-installation. In case the battery was sealed and holes had to be drilled, then, the drilled holes can be sealed with rubber plugs, which can be easily procured from any stores dealing in automobile parts.

After the battery is sealed, hook it to a regular multiphase battery charger. Sufficient time should be allowed to charge a deep cycle battery and “Quick Start” option should never be used to charge the battery quickly. It usually takes about an hour or more to fully charge a deep cycle battery.

After the battery is completely charged, reconnect the cables and then reinstall it on your DIY electric car. In order to test the battery after reconditioning and ensure that it is working, drive around for a few minutes. It is very essential to check the battery after every drive, initially, for a few days after reconditioning.

The process of charging the battery should be repeated till the mixture of salt and water facilitates retention of charge for a longer period. As a safety precaution, reconditioning of deep cycle battery should not be undertaken in a limited space and protective eye-shades should be put on while working with uncovered cells.

Lead acid batteries come in a variety of types and the most frequently used ones in homemade electric cars are tubular deep cycle batteries designed to hold the electric charge for prolonged periods without the necessity of renewing their charge by trickle or regular recharging. This especially suits their use in electric vehicles (EV) which are not used on a daily basis.

However, since they also contain liquid electrolyte in the form of dilute sulfuric acid, they need continuous maintenance. When they do finally fail or show signs of failing, their replacement costs are high and it is therefore economical to get them reconditioned at much lower price.

Reconditioning technique in the case of deep cycle batteries is not very difficult to master and one can attempt to do it as a DIY project, if the right tolls and knowledge is available to you. One of the first requirements is to get a suitable external multi-phase battery charger of the right capacity.

You would also need accessories like vice grips, crescent wrench, steel wool, glass funnel, bucket and protective rubber gloves. Certain chemical materials like baking soda, distilled water and Epsom salt are also needed. Once all these are ready, we can start by following the below instructions meticulously.

First, the external battery container needs to be checked thoroughly for any cracks or signs of leakage. If any leakage is detected, avoid touching the battery with bare hands and ensure rubber gloves are used for the task.

Disconnect the positive and negative leads connecting the terminal to the battery and remove the battery from its holding compartment. The battery housing and the terminals are to be thoroughly cleaned using a paste of baking soda and water to remove any traces of acid. Wherever necessary use steel wool to apply the paste.

Now remove the plastic breathing plugs on top of the battery and carefully drain the cells into a bucket without spilling. Certain brands of batteries are sealed and come without screwed plugs, but may have soft depressions on the top.

Drill these with a ¼ inch drill to open them and drain the electrolyte. Make a solution of eight ounces of Epsom salt in a quart of distilled water, without leaving any crystalline residue, stirring vigorously if required.

Using the funnel pour this solution to fill up each cell and recap them when plugs are available or in cases where holes were drilled to drain the battery, use rubber plugs easily available in most auto parts shops. Now connect the battery to the multi-phase battery charger using appropriate clips.

Since deep cycle batteries take longer duration for the charging process, avoid using the “quick start” feature if provided in the charger. Once the battery is fully charged, remove it from the charger and reconnect to your vehicle in the normal way.

Try to keep the charge by driving around slowly for a few minutes at a time. During the next few days inspect the battery regularly and repeat the charging process if required for full long duration charge. Adequate precautions like avoiding the reconditioning procedure in enclosed small spaces, wearing of safety eye glasses and use of rubber gloves will go a long way in ensuring safety.

If you are planning to start your own small business that you can run from the comfort of your home, why not start a battery reconditioning business. Battery reconditioning enterprise is a niche market with a strong demand which you can start with relatively small capital.

Why would the battery recon business be a good niche market? There is a growing trend in home solar power system and also the introduction of many pure electric cars on the market. This is a huge opportunity because both use a large quantity of batteries to store power. Sooner or later, these batteries would become less efficient and the owners will be looking for services to recondition them.

If you are looking to start your own battery reconditioning business, learn the trade of the markets from someone who’s already done it. He is Kevin Dixon or more commonly known as The Battery Geek.

In some cases, this is possible but there are a few factors to consider. The main factor is the state of internal condition of the battery and the reason why the battery has been taken out of service.

A homemade electric car would need from 15 – 20 units of deep cycle batteries as its on board power source. Let’s say after a couple of years, you start to notice the driving mileage of your EV is getting lesser before you need to recharge.

Can you recondition the batteries so it will give you the same driving distance when you first install it? In most cases, this is not possible.

The success of battery resurrection depends on the state of sulphate on the battery plates. The idea is to de-sulphate the plates by adding special chemical into the battery and using high frequency pulse. If you can break up the hardened sulphate, more plate surface will come into contact with the sulfuric acid therefore creating electric current.

But there’s another problem, not all batteries die from sulphation on its internal plates. In reality, most batteries go through a slow natural death from internal plate disintegration. You can try your best to recondition the deep cycle batteries of your electric car, but your attempt will be in vain.

This is a hard fact because some DIY enthusiasts will try to rejuvenate a dead deep cycle battery. The battery can be used on electrical equipment that requires low voltage supply. But to reuse it on your electric car which requires constant high amperage from the battery bank, the reconditioned battery simple could not do the job.

So in conclusion, you can try to recondition a weak or dead battery from your EV, but you can’t use it to power your DIY electric car anymore. You can use it for other low power demand usage. Nonetheless, by doing reconditioning and reusing the battery, you can still save some money.

Since an electric vehicle (EV) has no internal combustion engine and no gas tank, the main source of power is from the batteries.

The kind of battery most suitable for EV is the deep cycle type. It is the same kind of battery used on marine boats. Deep cycle battery is more robust and is capable of handling deep level of discharge.

A homemade EV would require at least 15 to 20 units of battery. That will give you an average driving mileage of approximately 60 to 100 miles. To ensure you have good mileage on your EV, it is best to check the batteries on a regular basis.

How do you check the battery condition?

The easiest way is to use a battery hydrometer.

The battery hydrometer is basically a glass tube with a suction ball at one end. It is used to draw the electrolyte from the battery into the tube.

Inside the glass tube, there is a float with multiple color markings. You can see a long red strip, a narrow white strip and then a wider green strip.

When the float in the tube is at the green level, that means the battery is in a very good shape. In other words, the more the float sticks out of the electrolyte in the glass tube, the stronger the battery is.

When the float is at the white marking, your battery is in a fair condition. If the float goes to the red area, the battery is not in a good condition. There is something wrong with the battery and you have to take it out for servicing.

In a situation like this, you have to bring the battery to a shop to get a full recharge.

Use the battery hydrometer to test all the batteries in your electric car. A faulty battery in your EV may affect the total driving mileage because it is not giving any power to the electric motor, and yet it is taking up space and weighing your car down.

That is where the golf car battery guide will come in handy.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Battery

For a normal sedan electric car, it would require from 10 to 15 units of deep cycle battery. With that amount of batteries, it will give you approximately 60 to 100 driving miles before you have to recharge.

If you are using electric golf cart deep cycle batteries, you want to maintain them so to achieve maximum performance and obtain a longer battery life. The end result is saving you time and money when you are using your electric car.

How to ensure the operation of your battery? According to the guide, the first step is choosing the right golf cart batteries. There are many types of deep cycle batteries available in the market. Choosing the right one will lower your expenses in the long run.

Extending The Life Of Your Battery

What are the common breakdown problem with a battery? Do you want to double or triple the life of your deep cycle battery? According to the manual, the key is to know how to have a solid maintenance and servicing program.

Even when there’s no moving parts in a battery, it does have chemicals that have to be dealt with. If you do not pay attention to this area, it will lead to all kind of problems for your electric car.

Battery Maintenance E-book Guarantee

One thing that I like about information product on the internet is the guarantees. Since Electric Golf Car Battery Guide is offered under Clickbank, you are automatically covered under their 60 Days Money Back Guarantee policy.

If you do not see any value after reading the manual, you can ask for a full refund within 60 Days from the purchase date. Try doing that at a Borders or Barnes and Nobles bookstore. You will have a very different experience.

Powering Your DIY Electric Car

If you are planning for a Do It Yourself Electric Car Conversion project, one of the biggest budget will go to the power source for the electric motor which is the batteries. The type of battery recommended for homemade electric car is the deep cycle type. This is the same type of battery used on electric golf carts.

A deep-cycle lead-acid battery is designed to deliver a consistent voltage as the battery discharges its power. In contrast, starter batteries (e.g. most automotive batteries) are designed to deliver sporadic current spikes. Deep cycle batteries can be charged with a lower current than regular batteries.

Making Your DIY Electric Car Practical

Most DIY electric would have a driving mileage of approximately 50 – 100 miles. The actual mileage will depend on a few factors such the net weight of the donor car, power rating of the electric motor, battery charging state and also the driving condition.

An average sedan electric vehicle would need 10 – 15 units of deep cycle battery to provide sufficient power to make the EV practical for everyday use. Some people may be wandering, how to find cheap batteries for EV conversion? There is one place that you try…it’s at Ebay.

Finding Cheap Deep Cycles Batteries At eBay

Here’s how you find cheap battery for your electric car conversion project. First, go to eBay main web site at www.ebay.com. There will be a pull down menu on the middle of the web page.

If you are wandering how to recondition battery at home, maybe this blog post will be able to help you. The process of reconditioning old batteries and bring them to life is not that difficult. What you will need is the right information and the right tools.

Firstly, why do battery go dead? If you want to know how to recondition battery, you have the understand sulfation.

Sulfation refers to the process whereby a lead-acid battery (such as a car battery) loses its ability to hold a charge after it is kept in a discharged state too long due to the crystallization of lead sulfate.

Lead-acid batteries will generate electric power through a chemical reaction. Lead and lead dioxide, which are the active materials on the battery’s plates, react with sulfuric acid in the electrolyte to form lead sulfate.

When formed, the lead sulfate are very fine and can be converted back to lead. Over time, the converted lead will coat the battery’s plates therefore less surface contact with the electrolyte. This process is known as sulfation.

To recondition a car battery, we have to find a way to get rid of the sulfation. When the sulfate is removed, the battery will regain its ability to hold electric charge.

One way of doing so is building a small musical instrument that resonates a sound inside the battery. Most work in a pulse fashion blasting sound at the battery plates.

Being made of metal the plates vibrate and as they vibrate those nasty sulfate crystals drop away from the plates. They land back in the water in the battery and are reconverted into sulfuric acid. This kind of battery recondition process is very dangerous. Therefore, always practice “Safety First”.
