With ever rising gas prices and the present downtrend in the economy, there is a now more urgent need to find different new ways to increase gas mileage than before. By exploring different ways of increasing car gas mileage, the car owner will be able to reach his planned destination with lower gasoline costs.

Every model of a car is designed to run at specific amount of fuel per mile. The gas mileage will only change depending upon how fast one drives and the place where he is driving that necessitates the car’s engine to consume more gas.

Nevertheless, the car will maintain particular rate of gasoline consumption in every place it travels. Fuel economy or fuel efficiency is the miles traveled per gallon of gasoline (MPG). The higher the value, the more efficient the vehicle is. The gas mileage of most of the cars manufactured from 2000 to 2008 normally varied between 20 and 30 miles per gallon.

Although this efficiency factor depends on the type of the car one drives, till recently, most of the car manufacturers had treated this as a higher norm. The gas mileage for various models of cars such as hybrid cars can be raised to as much as 40 t0 80 miles per gallon. In order to increase the gas mileage, it is necessary to make a few small alterations to the car. Improving gas mileage means every gallon one saves for the miles covered will lead to corresponding increase in fuel efficiency and savings in fuel expenses.

To begin with, gas mileage can be improved and accordingly, fuel consumption reduced, if one reviews the way he drives. For example, if a car owner drives below certain speed, does not accelerate too much when in driving in the town or driving in a street where there are not many traffic signals.

These steps alone will reduce energy consumption by 1-2 miles per gallon and accordingly, reduce the extent of gas the car consumes wherever he drives. There are many other methods that will help in increasing a car’s gas mileage, as for instance engaging the car in neutral when the car has to be stopped and slide along in certain places so that gasoline does not reach the engine. This will also facilitate to engage the car in gear without extra gas.

Proper maintenance of the car will also help in increasing the miles per gallon. These maintenance aspects include tuning up the engine, regular cleaning, keeping heavy articles out of the car in order to reduce additional pressure on the engine.

Keeping a close watch on what the vehicle requires is the easiest method to ensure that it remains fuel efficient. Irrespective of what type of car one drives or how far one has to travel, it is always possible to find ways and means to be more fuel efficient by making some of the alterations in the driving habits.

Fuel efficiency is directly related to fuel consumption and saving money on gas. All car owners should keep this in mind and take all possible steps to improve gas mileage of their cars.

If you are really feeling the pinch from rising gasoline prices, why not consider converting your gas guzzler into a pure electric car? What you’ll need is a good EV conversion guide, hand tools and a small investment capital for parts and components.
Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular and you may already have heard or read about them in news media. There are different factors that make electric cars so popular.

First of all, driving an electric car is so cheap. An electric car uses electricity to run whereas a gasoline powered car uses gasoline. Gasoline is costlier than electricity and its price is increasing day after day. Those who want to reduce the cost of driving a car are converting their cars into pure electric vehicle (EV).

Secondly, an electric car is environment friendly. Since electric cars use electricity to run, they don’t emit exhaust fumes like the traditional cars. Carbon emission from gasoline powered vehicles pollutes the environment more than anything else.

The third reason for the popularity of electric and hybrid cars is the increased awareness among the public of the need to keep the environment clean. The general public tries to follow the example of famous people who own and drive electric cars.

Most electric cars on the road are not manufactured as electric cars; they are ordinary cars converted into electric cars. Just by looking at a car, you can’t tell whether it is an electric car or a gasoline powered car. By listening to the sound of the car, you can mostly make out what type of car it is.

Unlike a gasoline powered car, an electric car makes no sound or makes just a humming sound. If you want to find the difference between an electric car and a gasoline powered car clearly, you should lift the hood of the car. Under the hood of an electric car, you will find:

1. An electric motor in the place of the fuel engine

2. That the controller is connected to the battery, and

3. Electricity is supplied to the motor through the controller.

In an electric vehicle, you will find a number of wires. But in the case of an ordinary car, there will be a number of pipes, hoses and tubes to carry the liquid fuel and oil to different parts of the car and to expel the exhaust fume.

Another plus point for an electric car is its easy maneuverability. It is easier to drive an electric car than a conventional car. It can also attain high speed as soon as it is started.

Even when the car is running at a low speed, it has enough power to climb a curb easily. But if it is an ordinary car that you are driving, you have to first stop your car, change the gear and accelerate fully to get the force the car needs to climb the curb.

Of course, converting a car into an electric car has its downside also. If you are a conversion enthusiast, you can convert your car into an electric car yourself by gathering information on EV car conversion from the internet. Since there are a number of websites which provide free and detailed instructions on car conversion, converting your car into an electric car will not be a big issue for you.

Batteries store energy to be used in almost all the applications of the current world. This necessitates the dependence on fossil fuels.

However, deep cycle batteries play a great role in reducing the need for fossil fuels and these batteries help in reducing the carbon foot print caused by the usage of other batteries in consumer applications. It is because the deep cycle batteries store their energy received from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

A starter battery which is recharged using the automobile’s alternator, is powerful enough to help in starting the engine but it does not serve the purpose if it comes to household equipments which need power constantly. For homemade electric cars, deep cycle batteries which are designed in a way to sustain the stored energy for a longer period of time are perfect for the job.

Long term charge, consistent power release, longer period of usage are the key and striking features of deep cycle batteries for electric vehicles (EV). Consistent power release helps in preventing the batteries from getting drained quickly.

On a hot day, solar panels can be used at home to trickle charge the battery units via special purpose charges. When the sun goes down, the deep cycle batteries help to keep the consistency of the power source, thereby widening the use of solar power. The slow distribution of power extends the life of the deep cycle batteries.

Deep cycle batteries do not need marketing, since the environment friendliness of the product is in itself a great promotional tool. As this is the best alternative for carbon based power, the entire world is much attracted to it and manufacturing of fossil fuel power is becoming less desirable.

No inferior to the traditional power supply, these batteries can also save the environment. Their usage as a power resource for residences and small vehicles, and their durability make these batteries highly dependable.

The price of the battery technology products have gone down and this makes the maintenance of the high efficiency models of the deep cycle batteries much affordable. This will make it a good replacement for internal combustion engines as the electricity stored can be used to power high torque electric motors.

By storing the electricity at an affordable cost, the deep cycle batteries make the usage of renewable power convenient and undoubtedly this factor helps in keeping the environment safe. This type of batteries help in reducing the use of fossil fuels to a much greater extent than one can think of.

If the consumption of fossil fuels that power all the cars, trucks, SUVs etc in the world are reduced, we can assure that here starts the “go green” concept. Leave alone the household appliances and small vehicles, the deep cycle batteries can also be used in trains, ships and airplanes.

Putting together the good features of this product, it is not an exaggeration, if we say that this environment safe product is going to solve many of the environment concerned problems.

Couple of months back, I wrote a blog post about the electric charging stations network proposed by the California start up company Better Place. Better Place has a plan to put electric charging station to charge the battery of a pure electric car. Just like a conventional car stopping by the pump station to fuel up.

One of the drawback of pure electric vehicle (EV) is the drive mileage. A Do It Yourself (DIY) electric car may have a drive mileage of approximately 100 – 150 miles before you have to recharge the battery. Even the high end EV such as the Tesla Roadster has a drive mileage of approximately 220 miles. Can you use an EV for long driving trip? To make that a reality, we need facilities to recharge the batteries of an electric car.

Batter Place went out trying to solve that problem. Their idea is to build battery replacement / switching station. The concept is to drive your electric car to one of these station, drop off the discharged battery and a new charged battery pack will be installed in your car. The whole process takes less than 2 minutes. Sounds like science fiction? Check out the video below.

From the looks of it, the battery switching station only works for certain electric car model with specially design battery storage bay at the bottom of the car. I don’t think the setup will work for a homemade electric car. I guess electric car enthusiasts would have to wait for a battery technology breakthrough for the means to extend the EV drive mileage.

Are Better Place electric charging stations accessible by DIY electric car users?

Better Place, a California start up company is proposing to set up a large network of electric charging posts in Israel, Denmark, Australia, California and Hawaii.

This is definitely a good news on the development of the electric car for the masses. The current challenge for electric vehicle is its mileage per charge. With these electric charging posts, EV users can drive a further distance hence making EV more practical.

I have been thinking. Will DIY electric car users able to use these electric charging posts?

From the information that I’ve gathered from the web, Better Place has tied up with Renault-Nissan to develop the electric car. No doubt the electric car from Renault-Nissan will be expensive to lease or purchase.

It will be great if Better Place charging post can be used by DIY electric car. However, from the looks of it, there may be some techical and safety issues in doing that. Nonetheless, the electric car is slowly but surely gaining it’s foothold on the transport industry.
