What would a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle look like if you were to convert it to run on pure electricity? Well, firstly, if you were to paint it candy red with lightning bolts painted on the front of the hood, it will look damn cool!

That is exactly what Dale Kling of Otsego, Michigan did to his “Lighting Bug” EV Volkswagen Beetle. I like his electric Bug so much I thought of putting his video on my DIY electric car blog.

Check out his video below.

Here’s what Dale did to his EV Bug. He took out the internal combustion engine (ICE) and installed the Netgain Industries Impulse 9 electric motor. That’s a huge sucker capable of kicking out a lot of torque.

He uses the Curtis controller which is capable of maximum 500 amps output for 2 minutes. That’s a whole lot of “get go” power you’ll need for an electric vehicle.

Dale’s EV is running on a 96 volts power system with deep cycle batteries stored at the front and the inside of his 1969 VW Beetle.

Do you know what I love about the EV Bug? It is the sound…or lack of it when it moves. EVs give off a soft hum when it’s moving. Love it!

Ever wonder how is it like driving a home made electric car? Driving an EV is actually quite similar to driving a gasoline driven car. The only difference is the feeling that the car is heavier due to the additional weight of the batteries. But it is no difference that driving with 2 or 3 passengers in the car.

You have to remember, and electric motor can pack a lot of torque. An EV can go pretty fast if you were to floor the power pedal. If you are not careful, you can really crash your electric car into another vehicle. Just because you are not burning any fossil fuel doesn’t mean you can ignore the rules on the street. If you are wandering what’s the feeling like getting into an EV, check out the video below.

Do It Yourself (DIY) Electric Car Conversion in Australia

I found a video below from Youtube about an Australian guy that made his own electric car in Australia. He totally retrotiffed a Hyundai Getz to run purely on electricity. Just like most of the electric car pioneer, he faces some challenges from the state government. Good news is, the local government of Victoria is open to his idea. Check out the video.

I think it is a matter of time before the world’s governments open up to the idea of mass electric vehicles. How long can we depend on fossil fuel? We should applaud all the electric car enthusiasts around the world and offer our support to them. Hopefully, one day all of us will be driving a clean, efficient and noiseless electric motorcar.
