DIY Electric Vehicle (EV) Conversion

How practical is a Do It Yourself (DIY) electric vehicle conversion? Many people are thinking of converting their existing gasoline driven car to run on electricity.

This may due to the recent gasoline price hike back on 2008. Many people were caught off guard by an inflated energy expense bill. Some had no other choice but to abandon their vehicle at home and use the public transportation.

Other vehicle owners have decided to be proactive and do their own DIY electric vehicle conversion. How do you retrofit a car to an electric vehicle (EV)? This blog post will provide some information on EV conversion.

The concept of converting your car to run on electricity is to remove the [tag-tec]internal combustion engine[/tag-tec] and replace it with an electric motor.

To propel the vehicle forward, the motor would be connected to the existing transmission unit. To power the motor, you will need a series of deep cycle batteries. An average electric car would require 10 to 15 units of batteries.

How far can you drive the EV? On a full charge, it would cover approximately 150 miles before you have to recharge. The actual mileage of the car will depend on the motor power rating, weight of the car, battery charging state and the driving condition.

As a disclaimer, you should not be doing your own electric car conversion at home if you are not well versed with automobile engineering. If you are not good with hand tools, you should not be taking out the engine.

In this case, you should outsource the work to a professional mechanic. What you should do is learn some basic science on electric car. With the information, at least you will know when you are being charge for unnecessary parts or work done on your car.

There are many electric car conversion guides on the web. For EV guides review, go to http://www.cbelectriccar.com and download the first chapter of “Build Your Own Electric Car” e-book.
