The following is an interview did with Rod Muller of Goolwa, South Australia. Muller is a pure electric vehicle owner in Australia.

The donor car was initially a gasoline driven 1988 Suzuki Alto with 850cc internal combustion engine (ICE). Since then, it has been converted to run purely on electric power via a DIY electric car conversion.

The EV runs of 6 units of 8 Volts battery which will give it a top speed of 72 kmh. The electric car has a range about 50 – 60 km before it has to be recharged.

The pure electric Suzuki Alto is pretty useful if you need a vehicle to drive around town. If you are interested to convert your old gasoline driven car to electric, check out Peter Millward’s Electricity 4 Gas electric car conversion manual.

Electric Car Australia - How the Latest Development will Benefit Electric Car Enthusiasts

Electric Car Development in Australia

How would the latest electric car development benefits Electric Car enthusiasts in Australia. The recent buzz on the idea of electric car for the masses is the plan from the organization Better Place planning to invest AUD$1 billion to setup Australia own electric car network.

If the idea were to materialized, it would be a great boost for electric car enthusiasts.

We will see more people taking the initiative to initiate DIY electric car conversion project from their home garage.

Better Place vision is to setup mass electric charging station in metropolitan area. The plan is to partner with Nissan / Renault to manufacture the electric vehicle and Better Place with be the battery OEM supplier.

If the demand is high, Nissan / Renault may not have the resources to build enough EVs. Most probably, Better Place may allow electric car enthusiast to retrofit their battery packs on standard gasoline driven cars.

This may also bring down the cost of owning an electric car. It is the chicken and egg scenario. If the electric car infrastructure is in place, more people will use electric vehicle.

If there is a demand, the government and private organization will build more electric car infra. Do you see the cycle now?

I found a video below from Youtube about an Australian guy that made his own electric car in Australia. He totally retrotiffed a Hyundai Getz to run purely on electricity. Just like most of the electric car pioneer, he faces some challenges from the state government. Good news is, the local government of Victoria is open to his idea. Check out the video.

I think it is a matter of time before the world’s governments open up to the idea of mass electric vehicles. How long can we depend on fossil fuel? We should applaud all the electric car enthusiasts around the world and offer our support to them. Hopefully, one day all of us will be driving a clean, efficient and noiseless electric motorcar.

Check out the related post on electric vehicle in Australia below:

Electric Car Network For Australia – An American (of course) company is planning on building a huge electric car powering network here in Australia by around 2012. This is certainly a step in the right direction. AGL Energy has apparently promised to back the venture by …

Electric-Car Maker Sets Sights on Australia – It is already building electric-car networks in Israel and Denmark, where it plans to begin mass marketing electric cars in 2011. Australia would be the largest effort by Better Place to steer a country off oil dependence. …

$600M Electric Car Project Hitting Australia – Australia, on the other hand, is the 6th largest country in the world, with over 15 million cars on the road. The electric network will connect Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, and contain hundreds of charging stations within the cities, …

The A$1 billion ($676 million) project could see the …
