Prepping Up For A Do It Yourself (DIY) Electric Car Conversion Project At Home

One of the first electric car conversion manual that I bought from the internet was Les Oke’s Convert 2 EV e-book. Before I started this blog, I have no clue on how a pure plug-in electric vehicle (EV) works. Since then, I had gathered some information and I am now more knowledgeable on the science of an electric car.

As I was going through my copy of Convert 2 EV to get ideas for a new blog post, I come across the chapter on “Getting started on building an electric car at home”. Les wrote about prepping your garage for an EV conversion project and getting all the tools ready. The point that he tried to bring across is “how to get the tools cheaply”. I thought that might be a great idea for a new blog post.

If you are planning a DIY electric car conversion project, you want all the tools ready in your garage. If you have the budget, it is best to buy sets of new tools from Home Depot or any hardware store nearby. If you are working on a tight budget, you have to be creative to find inexpensive tools.

The first step you can take to source for cheap tools is to look for special sales offers. Be on a constant look out for clearance sales from any hardware store. The tool model may not be the latest but it will get the job done. What’s important is for you to save money.

Another suggestion from Les is to put the word out that you would like tools for Christmas present, birthday etc. If you must, write out a list and give it to your friends and family members. People are always wondering what to buy for you and the list will make it easier for them.

Another option you can explore is to go to auction sites for cheap tools. If there is an auction house in your district, spend some time there and see if they have anything that strikes your interest.

You can also try using ebay. I actually did couple of blog posts on how to find cheap electric motor and how to find inexpensive battery on ebay. I guess it is the same process if you are looking for cheap tools on ebay.

If you want to save cost, you do not have to buy all the tools. Some can be used on a rental basis. Some of the tools you will only need for a day and may never use again. An engine hoist fits into this category. So visit a local rent-all place and get a list of what they have available. Would you rather rent this tool for $20 per day than buy one for $300?

There are many other suggestions to saving money on tools as mentioned by Les Oke. Obviously, the strategy can’t be applicable if you need to tools tomorrow. You have to plan it in advance.

If you are looking for more tips and strategy on how to save cost on a electric car conversion project, be sure to check out Convert 2 EV manual. The ideas in there will save you thousands of dollars.
