The Maxim Of Convert a Car To Electric
If you are thinking of converting cars to electric, there are a few things that you have to understand. Driving a [tag-tec]pure electric vehicle[/tag-tec] (EV) is not the same as driving a conventional automobile. The main difference is the actual driving mileage.
For a normal gasoline driven car, the driving mileage can be unlimited in the urban area. This is because the drive mileage is dependent on its energy source which is gasoline.
Fossil fuel has been around for more than 100 years and large corporations have invested heavily on the gas infrastructures. If you were to run out of gas in your car, a pumping station is just around the corner. You can virtually drive from one end of the country to the other end, as long as there are service stations along the way.
For an [tag-tec]electric vehicle[/tag-tec], the scenario is very different. Since EV is still in its infancy, the facilities to support electric cars are not yet available. An electric car carries a limited amount of power on board. The power are stored in battery packs.
If you are performing DIY electric car conversion, the homemade EV would have a driving mileage of approximately 100 miles before it has to be recharged.
Most EV owners will recharge their vehicle at home. That in effect will give you a net driving mileage of 50 miles. You can drive 50 miles to your destination, and the balance battery power will be needed for you to get back.
That being said, there are certain benefits of using an EV, especially is you are are using it for short commute. You may need a vehicle to travel to do grocery shopping or to pick up your kids from soccer practice. An EV for that kind of usage is perfect. It is cheap to operate and does not pollute the environment.
If you are seriously considering convert car to electric, you can do so by sending your car to a professional mechanic to be retrofitted. If you are good with hand tools, you can also perform your own Do It Yourself electric car conversion. As long as you understand the limits of EV, the electric car will serve you just fine.
